Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design 10th Edition

Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design 10th Edition
Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design 10th Edition by Richard Budynas and Keith Nisbett is intended for students beginning the study of mechanical engineering design. Students will find that the text inherently directs them into familiarity with both the basics of design decisions and the standards of industrial components. It combines the straightforward focus on fundamentals that instructors have come to expect, with a modern emphasis on design and new applications. The tenth edition maintains the well-designed approach that has made this book the standard in machine design for nearly 50 years.

Some of the statistical material contained in the previous edition was eliminated in the 10th edition. This includes much of Chapter 20, Statistical Considerations, and Sec. 6-17, Fatigue Failure Resulting from Variable Loading. However, specific statistical material pertinent to the 10th edition was retained and integrated within the sections that utilize statistics.

The mathematical relationship between the design factor and reliability is covered in the first chapter of Introduction to Mechanical Design where the design factor and reliability are defined and discussed. In Sec. 2-2, The Statistical Significance of Material Properties, is totally self-contained. The statistical Weibull distribution is necessary in the chapter on Rolling-Contact Bearings and is completely contained within this chapter.
